What are stink bugs?

Stink bugs were not originally native here in the United States. Rather, they found their way over from Asia back in 1996. They are also known as a “shield bug” due to their oval-shaped bodies that come to a point at the rear. Stink bugs have made a name for themselves due to the pungent odor they emit from glands when handled, threatened, or squished. Adult stink bugs grow to roughly 17 millimeters in length and come in varying shades of brown and tan, sometimes with coppery or metallic blue patched heads.

Are stink bugs dangerous?

Despite the foul and off-putting odor they emit and their annoying habits, stink bugs are no more than nuisance pests that disturb  everyday living. They do not sting or bite, and they are not venomous or poisonous. However, stink bugs can pose a threat to agriculture and farms by feeding on crops.

Why do I have stink bug problems?

Stink bugs tend to invade homes during the late fall months as the weather grows colder. When the weather is warm enough, these pests can commonly be found soaking up the heat on the sunny sides of home or business. They will often wander further into your home or business through an open window or door or, or through a crack or gap in its exterior foundation. They will likely stick around for a while if they find the warmth they’re looking for.

Where are stink bugs commonly found?

Stink bugs can often be found on the side of homes, garages, or sheds, around windows and doors, and near gardens and fruit trees in warmer months. In the late fall, they typically take up residence inside wall voids, crawl spaces, and attic areas.
