What Are Cockroaches?

Cockroaches are very common pests that can be found in invading homes and businesses all around the globe. In fact, there are roughly 4,000 species of cockroaches found around the world. Thankfully, only four of those species can be found invading homes and businesses regularly here in Delaware and the surrounding areas.

Although cockroaches come in a variety of shapes and sizes, all cockroach species have some similarities. In general, cockroaches range in size from .7 inches to 3 inches, have flat, oval-shaped bodies, and though many species have wings, most species can’t actually fly. Cockroaches are extremely difficult to catch because of their speed and agility.

The species found in our area include

  • American cockroach (Periplaneta Americana)
  • German cockroach (Blattella Germanica)
  • Oriental cockroach (Blatta Orientalis)
  • Brown-banded cockroach (Supella Longipalpa)

Are Cockroaches Dangerous?

Cockroaches pose a number of serious health risks when they enter any home. These risks come in the form of: diseases they carry, bacteria they pick up while traveling through unsanitary locations, and their shed skin and fecal matter—which have been known to trigger asthma attacks in susceptible individuals.

Some of the harmful illnesses cockroaches can cause include:

  • Salmonella poisoning
  • Diarrhea
  • Dysentery
  • Asthma attacks
  • Typhoid Fever
  • Plague
  • Gastroenteritis

Why Do I Have A Cockroach Problem?

Cockroaches will invade homes and businesses to gain access to their three main needs: food, moisture, and shelter. If you’re dealing with a cockroach infestation in your property, chances are it is providing cockroaches with these three necessities:

Food. Cockroaches are omnivorous insects that seek out organic food sources to sustain them. This could be anything from soda spilled on the floor to a piece of chicken that has fallen under the stove and anything in between!

Moisture. Although cockroaches survive for weeks without water, they still need a source of water in order to survive and thrive. These pests often find water from leaky faucets, pipes, and other high-moisture areas such as basements and crawl spaces.

Shelter. Cockroaches seek out areas that are dark, damp, and secluded, and our basements and storage areas make the perfect spot!
