What Are Millipedes?

Millipedes are common pests that can be found throughout the entire United States. Despite their name, millipedes do not have a thousand legs. In fact, millipedes typically have between 30 and 90 pairs of legs. The current world record is held by the species of millipede called Illacme Plenipes, with a staggering 750 legs! Millipedes and centipedes are commonly confused. Speed is the best way to tell these pests apart. Centipedes move at a high rate of speed while millipedes typically move much slower.

Are Millipedes Dangerous?

In general, millipedes are not considered dangerous pests as they don’t sting, bite, or transmit harmful diseases. However, these pests do have the ability to release a pungent and repulsive fluid that can cause irritation to the skin upon contact. Some species even have the ability to shoot this fluid out several inches. One thing to note when dealing with millipedes is that, although this fluid is not a serious threat to humans, it can be toxic to your pets. If you notice millipedes around your property, it’s a good idea to call your local exterminator for an inspection.

Why Do I Have a Millipedes Problems?

Millipedes do not typically prefer living in homes over living out in nature, as homes don’t supply them with the damp and deteriorating vegetation in which they thrive. However, if conditions outside are unsuitable for their survival, millipedes may be pushed to find shelter within your property’s walls. Once they are inside, if your home has potted plants, a plentiful supply of dead insects, and areas that are warm and moist, millipedes may decide to stick around.

Where Are Millipedes Commonly Found?

Millipedes are found in warm and moist areas. When living outside, millipedes are primarily found living in the moist soil beneath leaf litter or mulch. Inside homes, damp, secluded areas such as basements, crawl spaces, and storage areas often provide invading millipedes with the conditions they need to survive.
